When I asked about this, the answer was, to paraphrase, that the institution pays our benefits. When I discussed my upcoming leave with my employer, I was told that after my sick and vacation leave ran out I would have to return to work and that my employment would be terminated if I didn’t. I am a first-year postdoc and recently gave birth to my second child.

These are a couple of the major findings presented in a comprehensive report called “ Parents in the pipeline: retaining postdoctoral researchers with families.” Published in 2017 by the Pregnant Scholar Project in partnership with the National Postdoctoral Association, this resource presents useful data collected regarding both mother’s and father’s greatest challenges in raising families during their postdocs.Īnother major finding that I have personally experienced recently was that many institutions will not allow new parents to take unpaid leave. I can think of few groups of people more likely to get sick or need vacation time than new Mothers. Did you know that many institutions don’t provide paid maternity leave for their postdocs? Even when paid time off is given, it often isn’t long enough to allow a mother to heal physically, much less bond with her newborn.Īnd with or without institutional paid leave, many moms are forced to use some or all of their sick and vacation leave to get the time they need.
